CORAM DEO - EMERGENCY UPDATE - JANUARY 13, 2010
Wednesday January, 13, 2010, the nation of Haiti was hit with a devastating earthquake at approximately 5 pm local time yesterday the 12th of January. The quake measured a reported magnitude of 7.0 according to the USGS. There has also been a series of strong aftershocks that are causing even more concern and fear with locals some aftershocks measuring in at 5.3 in magnitude! Mission of TEARS board member Tim Bos has been in contact with Karen Bultje at Coram Deo. Karen and those living inside Coram Deo slept outside last night to be safe as there is undetermined damage to the building, they are shaken up but are doing what they can to get by. Repairs will be needed.
We are asking you to donate to our earthquake relief fund to help Karen and friends weather this storm. They need our help more than ever and we need to respond! To donate  follow the canadahelps.org link, look under the earthquake relief choice. Your prayers are needed just as much; we need to share our love for the people of Haiti. Please donate now!

The Board of Directors for Mission of T.E.A.R.S. would like to take this opportunity
to introduce and welcome Karen Bultje under our Haiteen Project for Haiti. Karen has many
years of experience on ground in Haiti ministering to some of the most urgent medical needs
within the population. Her organizational name of Coram Deo is well known and respected in
Haiti. Part of her work was in an educational program along with her own expertise in
medical issues. New leadership has lifted the many demands of the school from Karen to allow
her to focus on her specific area of ministry in urgent medical care. Board member for
Mission of T.E.A.R.S. Tim Bos will continue to manage the Haiteen Project under Mission of
T.E.A.R.S. policies and that now will include the work of Coram Deo. As an added benefit to
this new relationship with Mission of T.E.A.R.S. Tim and Karen can draw on their past
knowledge of working with one another in Haiti.  Karen Bultje will continue her on ground
delivery of the services and ministry she has provided in the past now with the cooperation
and charitable administration of Mission of T.E.A.R.S. We encourage those who have supported
Karen in the past to continue with that support.  Donations can be sent to Mission of
T.E.A.R.S. office at Suite 504, 50 Gervais Drive Toronto Canada M3C 1Z3 or by  Visa or
Mastercard, call 416-449-0018.  Please note on the donation
it is for Haiteen Project Coram Deo. This website will continue to post updates from Karen
as recieved in the example below.

who is recovering from surgery for Hydrocephalus.

Hi!
Last week was a busy week with the medical program. We completed the passport paperwork and
lab work for Emerson (the boy with the severe cleft lip/palate). Now we are just waiting for
the hospital paperwork to come through from the hospital in the United States that is
willing to treat him before applying for a medical visa. Pray for the remainder of the
paperwork that still needs to be done and in place for the visa. Recently there has also
been some changes to the supporting arm of Coram Deo. Because of differences in vision CDIA
will no longer be supporting Coram Deo in Haiti. They will be supporting Randy and Karen
Lodder. The school program here has been transferred to their care. All primary and
secondary sponsored students are now part of CDIA. We give the Lord thanks that Mission of
Tears will be taking Coram Deo under their umbrella. Pray for all the new arrangements being
made. God willing Coram Deo will establish a deaf school on our property. The deaf school in
Bon Repos approached us with the idea of opening a satellite deaf school in Port-au-Prince.
They can help in equipping us with teachers to teach deaf children in the area. A number of
things need to fall in place though before this idea can become a reality. That's all the
news for today.

Paulna continues to recover from her leg surgery. We need to get a control xray done on her leg so that the orthodpedic surgeon at Healing Hands can see how it is healing. Attached is a photo of her. She has 4 pins in her left leg to keep it straight. After this leg heals she will need surgery on her right leg as well to get that leg straight too. Pray for continued healing for her leg. Michelore, who is at Deedee's house is doing great! He is now strong enough to stand. This is the first time in 6 years that he is able to do this! He is proud that he can stand. Pray for continued strength for him so that one day God willing he may walk. Attached is a photo from his days of sitting in the dirt in his village. He sure has improved!

Last week was the hydrocephalus evaluations. I spent the week scrambling to get cat scans and dossiers for last minute hydrocephalus contacts. Pray for the plans being made for the surgeries scheduled for the end of October and also for the parents whose children will not be selected.

Diane and Karen make little friends in the Seaside town of Cité Soleil, known for it's extreme violence.

Diane in Cité Soleil's poorest part of town housing over 250,000 of Port au Prince' poorest residents in the tin and brick houses seen in the background. Built on a garbage dump, families live in fields of trash with pools of fetid toxic water right on the sea shore.

Diane leaves her mark with the one school serving the kids in Cité Soleil. Hopeful kids attend a school that was built for them by Canadians in Cité Soleil.
Typical infrastucture breakdown as seen throughout Haiti. Opportunities to serve and help abound in Haiti, but so do the dangers for Mission of T.E.A.R.S. personnel. Here, Tim Bos, speaks with a foreign peacekeeper on a present situation.
Tim Bos and a moment worth it all. This little boy wanted nothing more than to be held and sit on Tim's lap for a moment.
